i'm starting to draw plans for a cross betwee the bjurt and a hexayurt. that is, adapting the hard sidewall covering that makes the hexayurt work well, to the framework of the 17' bjurt. the bjurts have 8 walls, so that's make an octabjurt really. well, it's a standard bjurt really, with sidewall materials from work done by the hexayurt folks.

once again even after testing and confirming my external quick disconnect hose worked, it failed, just when i needed it, using at an event this summer. (and once again) good thing the honda eu2000i runs all night on a gallon of gas, meaning i just had to fill up once a day to power my camp.
but this is getting frustrating.
cap & quick disconnect (fuel line connector).
working on this more and more, i'm starting to get keep some spare parts around. on a whim i compared my quick-disconnect (fuel line connector) with a new one, and noticed it was missing the inner o-ring that makes a tight seal when it connected to the tank. tried the new one, and it worked right away.

trapper has taken the map and added some nice features i haven't fussed with yet --i've added/updates a few more points as well. this version includes better shading for color models and routing --not a critical feature, but pretty cool!
please note that most garmin models will only hold one contiguous map, so uploading this map means your other maps may not display (on the Nuvi you may have to disable the current map to get this one to display)
folks can also stop by playainfo at the event, if you need assistance programming your garmin gps.

sendmap20.exe (rename this to sendmap20.exe).

here's my version of black rock city, garmin gps street map for 2007 --a bit delayed as i was waiting for the data from city planners then corrected by the survey crew. i've also been confirming the data while working with DPW, plus adding new features to the map.
this map includes potty locations (checked 'em all except the ones not placed yet!), extended gate road (from highway 34), and other new features from prior years.
this is a garmin formatted street vector map, you can use with most garmin gps models. upload the map using the sendmap.exe program, or copy the file to your memory card.
i may throw in a few updates as the city starts to take shape here, check back for the latest. also just changed sendmap to version 2.0, seems to work better.

i decided to extend this and include more dates... you can download these files, stuff 'em in your calendar, see what's going on -*tons* of events this year, with dozens of regionals this summer alone. (the files are 'ical' format, ics files).
my list for 2007, including regionals & other events:

looks like there are more widgets to make sync'ing/subscribing to calendars easy (easier). for example, you can 'subscribe' to my current burn calendar for 2007, using this address:
http://www.7hertz.com/download/calendar/2007/burn2007.ics
i've just been playing around with this stuff a bit, but here's how:
windows/outlook:
for outlook 2003/2007 there's a plug-in called 'remotecalendar' (posted on sourceforge), and lets you sync with calendars on the web (e.g. sync to google calendars, subscribe to the 'burn dates').
macs:
on the mac, the 'ical' program lets subscribe to a remote calendar. just choose 'subscribe', use the url for the calendar, and choose a refresh rate. there's also some software called 'spanning sync' which will let you sync as well.
google calendars:
download, then import into gcal.
palm:
try a program called isync?
so my external quick disconnect failed after two days on the playa. good thing the honda eu2000i runs for so long, it just meant i had to gas up once a day. still, i'm keen on getting the extended run time working.
i finally spent some time to fuss with this and figure out what went wrong. i was stumped at first, and started to just redesign the whole thing, at some point probably had multiple failure points too.

Holding a dying flashlight while trying to steer your costume away, keeping your petticoat from the 'elements'... wasn't exactly how you pictured the finer moments of your experience at Burning Man?
here's two ical calendar files for the moon phase/lunation, till 2012.
One just has full & new moon days (full day 'events')....the other has full, new, and quarter dates -with times noted (as 'appointments' in outlook).

here's an ical calendar file for the burn & burnal solstinox (equinox) dates, plus 'opening' gates -till 2012.
nothing 'official' here, just my calculations, maybe you'll find it useful... mostly i'm just playing around with exporting calendar data & calendaring. you can import this into outlook, google calendar, whatever. i have a another version with more dates like regionals -suppose i could post that as well if people wanted. maybe useful planning trips to catch regionals?
you can also use this with the moon calendar to project the moonlight schedule durning the event, or anytime you're on the playa really.
burnal equinox? burnal solstinox? i did some calculations, if anyone wants to know the dates for the burnal equinox --or solstinox for the next few years, here ya go. you can even celebrate the hour, if you wanna. (i was bored at work, programming this was more fun, should be accurate includes daylight saving time).
burnal solstinox, next few years...

(personally i prefer the term solstinox, seems an appropriate confusion of terms!).
so ring a bell, have a shot, make a toast. enjoy.
so, i got my generator for camp and whatnot.
i figured i would use it about once a year at burningman, at the regional burn or maybe at a party, really about twice a year --and maybe someday... sooomedaaay, the power would go out, i'd use it then. also, i took it to the playa in july assuming would use it --not realizing our camp had a nice 25kW gennie provided by bmorg. no need to run mine. so, mildly disappointed (since i just got my new toy and all)...i just left it packed up. still happy with the purchase, knew it's time would come.
turns out, no one was really watching the gauge on the 25kW, and we ran out of gas! i was away at the time, but a good friend knew i had a honda eu2000i and hooked it all up. my little honda came to the rescue to keep the lights and a few computers on!
for a testimonial of how quiet it was, i didn't even know it was running until i was practically standing on it, and heard it purring along...

with only a 4 to 12 hour run-time, there's a bit of an issue dealing with running the generator all night at burningman. i don't want to have to run back to camp just to make sure power is up, make sure the generator is purring along.
somewhere along the way i stumbled upon the other posts talking about using an external fuel tank, with certain model yamaha or honda (inverter class) generators.
some of these new models use fuel pumps (fuel sits lower than the carburetor)... so you can close off the cap, feed an external fuel line through it. suction will pull fuel from an external (and generally much bigger) tank. letting you go out and wander about, no having to worry 'bout power back at camp.
you can make your honda eu2000 run for days, not hours...

ok, so last year i decided that my camp needed quiet power, and i could use some of my own radical self reliance here, round out the rest of my own part of camp, be self sufficient, have power to run my sound system without fussing with other folks permission, without compromising camp power.

adapted from information posted on the web site, and placement data (thanks to roger for putting that part into a speadsheet).
i've extended / added more data so you you can search / filter / sort / find your friends and neighbors, list by camp hometown, etc. so you can connect with camps from your hometown ~ both on and off the playa.

it took me a long time to piece together adding contours to satellite photos. then i discovered nasa's worldwind viewer... now google has added a viewer that's really works well (leveraging their acquisition of keyhole inc).
it's really easy and the basic viewer is free. one nice touch, it includes building terrain for metro areas (using polygon rendering). more advanced features like GPS integration are targeted for premium versions.

the vault of heaven black rock city gps maps are done . . .
