black rock city

once again even after testing and confirming my external quick disconnect hose worked, it failed, just when i needed it, using at an event this summer. (and once again) good thing the honda eu2000i runs all night on a gallon of gas, meaning i just had to fill up once a day to power my camp.

but this is getting frustrating.

cap & quick disconnect (fuel line connector).

so...getting ready for the playa this year, i spent a little (more) time to fuss with this problem and figure out what went wrong. it's not rocket science, shouldn't be this hard.... be really nice to get this working, grr.

working on this more and more, i'm starting to get keep some spare parts around. on a whim i compared my quick-disconnect (fuel line connector) with a new one, and noticed it was missing the inner o-ring that makes a tight seal when it connected to the tank. tried the new one, and it worked right away.

huh, missing the o-ring? i thought this was a fluke event -but also thought it would be prudent to stock up with another spare in preparation for the playa. i also used some liquid latex in an effort to seal the gas cap side a little better. tested everything it out, worked like a champ.

so...i get to the playa, and spill some gas on the cap and notice the latex melted, along with the o-ring on that end broken. opps. of course, latex disintegrates in gas (duh)... and heat on the playa probably didn't help. not sure about the o-ring, but fortunately i had another spare. (this o-ring sits at the base of the hose barb on the cap). so i put a spare o-ring on the cap end to seal that up, but lo...

once again --the fuel isn't flowing. jebus, i'm cursed?!

why? what happens on the quick disconnect again? the o-ring is gone! this is like the *third* time!! i had a spare disconnect --but out of frustration, determination, or outright stubbornness to get the parts i have working, i get my tools out and put a spare o-ring back in the original disconnect.

seems that the inner o-ring has a habit of rolling (kind of toroidal motion) out as i disconnect from the tank --now, i *know* what to look for, and need to check every time i connect or disconnect the line from the tank. i'm wondering if they aren't designed that well, really shouldn't be *that* easy to lose the o-ring. well, at least i know to check. the end points are are really the only 'weak' points here, just hose clamps and a fuel filter in between. everything else should work without issue, this stuff is easy.

so after arriving to three events and not having this work, i fixed all the loose ends on the playa this year. and it worked all week, through the rest of the event!

finally, something worked !
