new on my list of people responsible for the shameless "dumbing down" of humanity -- the wheat foods council.
in a bit of shameless self promotion, they claim these points in various reports, press releases :
1) 33% of Americans still mistakenly believe that bread is fattening.
that's like the NRA saying "guns don't kill people". sure bread isn't fattening, especially if you don't eat it. fat isn't fattening, in the same way. you might as well say that "33% of Americans still mistakenly believe that fat is fattening".
these statements are meaningless without reflecting on quantity. ounce for ounce bread is actually pretty fattening... but a sandwich a day isn't going make you fat.
2) A majority (82 percent) of kids surveyed realize bread is not fattening, compared to 46 percent of adults.
ahh, nutritional advice from children. brilliant. we'd be eating candy all day. i'm fine with that. i love chocolate.
what's actually offensive, is how they've masked pure opinion with seemingly factual statements. bread has about 80 kcal (food Cal.) per slice (meaning beer, often thought to be a high calorie beverage, has about the same as 2 slices of bread). they've only made a claim on what people believe, and really nothing to assert bread isn't "fattening".
don't get me wrong, i love bread. i eat bread. hmm, i love beer too. put i'm not fond of people to misuse logic. they could just stick to the facts, and they'd still get their point across.
