electronics

add dvd player to the list. a friend dropped off their dvd player after it stopped working (no power). they actually already checked the internal fuse, and didn't know what to do after that.

these things are so cheap you can't really take them in for repair, you'd spend more than just buying a brand new one! would be a shame just to toss it out, if it's something simple like a busted switch.

so i thumbed around looking for the problem, double checked the fuse and wiring. took meter reading on the power supply - voltages were low. i figure i might just find a replacement power supply, pretty generic part right?

turns out not really. i went over to norvak electronics - they didn't have a suitable replacement power supply (you could certainly fashion something up, but you might spend as much on the power supply as a new unit).

but they did have a good eye and noticed one of the capacitor looked blown (it was fat, bulging at the top!). i didn't even think about testing individual components at the time.

i usually don't replace board components, but it's actually pretty easy. didn't even need to add solder, just heat up & pull the old cap out, and use the solder already in place to put the new one in. took a few incremental "moves" to wedge it out & then back in - only took a minute and worked like a champ.
