once you get the software loaded and you launch intellisync, it automatically looks for the rex 6000 -- but it must be assigned a com port from 1 to 4, not 5+. this is annoying because i have bluetooth devices that simply inherit several com ports in this range...
the management console won't let me change the default preferences for those items (until i connect those items, which should enable the property sheet / option on that ?). during install the rex (pc card modem driver) was assigned com port 9 - and the rex software couldn't "see" the rex 6000 in the slot. fortunately when the pc card is present (in the slot) the windows management console let's you change the com port assignment for the card.
this is pretty standard now, and honestly it's really nice to make these adjustments at the OS level. it's still disappointing the older software doesn't pole the system for a complete list - or just assumes old world limits (ports 1-4). more recently, i'm seeing software that has a fixed selection, up to port 9. the proper way is to handle this, is to make no assumptions and pole the system about how many devices / ports are available. just ask.
in this case, to get started i just chose to assign the card the same ports as a bluetooth device (knowing my bluetooth device was offline and wouldn't conflict). the good news is that even though windows reported the com port was currently assigned to another device - it allowed me to proceed. that did the trick. without this option, i could have still used the external serial docking station (which would have been assigned the fixed external port, com 2). but i'd rather use the pc card slot. in the end, i chose to assign the rex com port 3.
during install, when i inserted rex into the pc card slot, window prompted for a driver, and let the wizard automatically select the driver, using the stock windows pcmcia (pc card) modem driver, worked fine.
i found a suggestion, in an online forum, to put the rex windows2000 driver files from the installation into c:\windows\drivers folder. not sure if this does anything -- but i did this anyway. think i just leave the files in place for now, maybe come back to this when i get things working.
the same forum posted a registry tweak -- but i didn't tweak any registry settings. this is the setting for those curious . . .
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
"EnforceWriteProtection"=dword:00000000
i did have a huge problem getting started since my outlook 2000 personal file format 2003 (unicode) is not compatible with intellisync. you can only sync to the older outlook97-2002 file format. you can just create a new personal file in that format, add the subfolders (calendar, contacts, tasks, notes) and use outlook to copy-paste all your records into the folder.
once you have that in place, you go into "choose folder..." to assign the appropriate subfolder you want to sync to. i found this painful, because attempting to expand the folder in the treelist persistently failed. i just kept trying, and trying. sometimes it would work, and other times fail a dozen times in a row. i kept trying, restarting, and occasionally rebooting. dunno why it's so finicky. some dll gets stuck, maybe timing issue with outlook. no idea. everything is buggy, just keep trying. eventually i got through all four (contacts, calendar, tasks, notes) selections.
ok, so now when i got to synchronization process, to keep things simple i started just with tasks. it seemed to help to have at least one item on the rex. without that, it would just stop mid-way. it appeared to hang when it was polling the rex for items. adding one item on the rex seemed to help. again, frequently restarting here to get through the process -- after which point, it functions just fine.
so - i went about synchronization (e.g. first tasks first, then adding calendar, then contacts, finally notes). one at a time, mostly because getting selecting the pst folders was such a chore. (only once, early in testing did i get through all four items, selecting the outlook file etc). the good news is that once all your selections are in place, you don't really have to fuss with that again. after i added the additional outlook personal file (using the 2002 format), i did get a prompt on which profile to use in intellisync. only happened twice, and i'm not sure what sequence triggered the selection. the first time, i figured it was due to creating the new personal file, after that ~ not sure. anyway it's working now, and i'm not going to mess with it.
(check my later post for update, on how to get intellisync to work, and select personal folders).
