the vault of heaven black rock city gps maps are done . . .
some changes this year… i've made all the items like porta-potties waypoints instead of points of interest. that way you'll be able to use the 'locate nearest waypoint (by distance)' feature on your gps, and scroll to select the nearest one.
also note, to avoid having the map appear too cluttered, you can adjust the POI and waypoint display level (when panned out, in a wide mode, you don't need to see all the map detail) ! i set mine to display the POI and waypoint at 800ft -- helps avoid clutter when panned out.
this means you have two files to download to get all the data. it *also* enables you to delete/add/edit the waypoints data easily on the playa without having to download a new map.
the street data should be very accurate. the layout of features like porta-potties should be good, but some could be off by 100ft. these maps aren't meant to be definitive placement for city planning, last minute changes et al. (aside from the inherent inaccuracy of the gps).
i have included a second and more generic "grid layout" map, probably more useful to rangers and folks getting the playa ready. although the city is in place, maybe it will help somebody out there? or perhaps for next year. let me know if it does, feedback always welcome. as for me, i think the simple street vector map is more useful as a participant. the grid layout will tend to clutter up the screen again. since my gps can only load one map for the area at a time - i'll be using the 'street' version.
well - it's possible to set the map elements based on the zoom level. my etrex is set for maximum detail, and overrides that setting. it's just easier just to make a simple version of the map, let it be clear and useful. maybe next year i can spend more time to get the grid / street zoom detail worked out. enjoy!
waypoints are in the gpx file format...
