first time i took apart my laptop, i just wanted to take a look - i wanted to see if the cpu would be replaceable (which actually appears totally fused to the heat sink). i was also curious to take a look at the mini-pci wireless card (wondering if that would be replaceable as well), and where the antennas exactly were in the casing.
the first time, it took awhile and some patience. now i can do it in about two minutes. most of the screws you need to get to are highlighted here. there was one hard to get to somewhere inside around the pc card slot. hard enough, i didn't put it back, just be careful and take your time. you should be able to follow the pictures and few pointers here to get to all of the internals of the Acer Travelmate 350te-n. send me an email if you have any questions. and of course, proceed at your own risk.
here goes...
[1] in order to get to remove the keyboard, remove the side-wing / speaker covers (see photo). they are just plastic clips, not held in by any screws.

[2] on the bottom, there is a very long, central screw that anchors the keyboard, remove that screw and you can then remove the keyboard by sliding the clips (near "F4" and "F12") back. take care of the keyboard ribbon, which attaches to the motherboard (and easy to remove).
[3] if you want, you can remove the shielding now too. a few screws keep that in place.

[4] you need to remove the battery and disk drive to get to all the screws. basically remove all the screws you see on the bottom (depending on what your trying to get replace here). you'll need to do this to get to the fan.

[5] to remove the LCD screen, remove these screws that keep it in place, along with the screws for the vga signal lines. the LCD can completely be removed then. there's another screw just attached to the motherboard here as well (see photo).

[6] You should be able to take it all apart now and get to the fan. It's a small and simple part -- actually cheap, so they don't last long. It's called a "dish fan". It's the shaft type, and mine was making a lot of noise all on it's own (not hitting anything). I got the manufacturer and part number from the back and hunted the net for the item. It's found in some Sony Viao and other Acer models. being just out of warranty acer was kind enough to inform me that "In checking our system, it appears that the manufacturer's warranty expired....The flat fee for out of warranty repair is $449.00 plus tax and shipping the computer in to our repair depot." thanks, but no thanks !!
here's the part number, Sunon dish fan :
GC054006VH-8
CB.M.B124
DC 5, 1.0W
ZP

[7] the fan attaches to the board here. also highlighted, is the mini-PCI card. they are not easy to find *but* there are some places starting to sell mini-PCI cards on the net -- so you *can* replace the 802.11b with a 802.11g or 802.11a card. i have no idea how well they work, or if they will work with the wireless hot-key button. let me know if you try it out. Acer hasn't (or won't) release any specs / details on the hot-key button. there are some linux folks that have worked on the hot-key button (using bios i/o calls), so you could look around for info on that. i figure i'm going to probably replace this laptop before i worry about replacing the wireless card. but there you go.
also, the new fan (even the identicle part number) does not have the same wattage rating (0.5W instead of 1.0W)?? i have to use the manual fan control (in the notebook manager) to turn it on before the tempurature sensor kicks in. otherwise it works just fine. i spoke with an engineer at sunon, and you *might* be able to cut one of the control lines (yellow?) to force the fan on all the time, but i haven't taken the time to test that. so, i'm not sure that will work, but if you try it - let me know!

here's a discussion on the acer with other folks frustrated by the broken promise of bluetooth, and having issues with the lame fan design. my plastic screen bezel is also cracked. otherwise, in terms of the design, it's a beautiful laptop - the keyboard is perfect.

Comments what problems does a wrong wattage repalcement fan actually cause? Posted by nemi at March 28, 2004 05:42 PM the variable speed mode (auto) doesn't seem to function properly (runs slow). i use the bios control app to turn the fan on full, when i boot up. A sunon engineer thought that you might cut the yellow control wire to cause to fan run all the time. I haven't tested that. Frustrating part is that once the auto/variable mode kicks in, i have trouble getting the fan to turn on at all. their part number is 997-0540, for $25 just do a search for the part number online: GC054006VH-8(CB.M) and of course there's the helpful folks at inkjet4u.co.uk Posted by 7hz at October 19, 2004 10:34 PM I have a TravelMate 351TEV and it also has similar problem with the fan (it is a replacement). It will turn on for a few seconds when I start the computer, but it will not kick on automatically to cool the system afterward. I have to apply the "Fan always on" option in the notebook manager right after computer starts up to keep it running, but the fan doesn't always turn on even I try to apply that option. It is getting VERY annoying. I am wondering what is the best solution to this problem. Thanks in advance! Kevin Posted by Kevin at October 22, 2004 10:48 PM
[2] with a cold boot, sometimes activating the fan twice does the trick. [3] there are fairly cheap, slim laptop mounts/docking platforms with fans to keep things cool. [4] in the desert, or really hot environments the fan turns off no matter what. [5] an active hard disk, cpu, can make the laptop really hot. [6] and you may not need the fan, for really low cpu intensive applications. i have not found a better solution, so i keep putting up with it, knowing i will replace it soon. and i have started to keep a desk small fan nearby. crazy, just crazy. i read an acer press release once smug about it's cooling design, and that's what really gets me. Posted by 7hz at October 27, 2004 01:56 AM Hi, I just ordered my fan (for Acer 634LC) directly from Acer UK. I only paid £8. Same one on most places was £25 to £45!!! Anyway, just wanted to thanks for putting this page up with all the useful info. Thanks Posted by Vincent at November 19, 2004 01:39 PM Hi, I d'like to replace the CPU (current: PIII 650) with an PIII 850. In ths regard I wanna know if this is possible. At the beginning it is said that: "I wanted to see if the cpu would be replaceable (which it totally isn't being fused to the heat sink)". Waht excactely is meant with that??? Thanks in advance! Markus Posted by Markus van Hagebrecht at November 22, 2004 05:55 AM Thanks for all the great info. on replacing the fan. I have had to run my TM 350 on "battery optimized" performance to keep it from overheating. It still gets really hot. The fan clearly isn't running, and I don't know if it ever has. FYI, you can download the TM 350 service guide if you go to this link: https://www.synapsenow.com/synapse/data/7117/documents/tm350sg.pdf The service guide has all sorts of great info. on replacing parts and taking the TM apart. Acer changes the server location occassionally. Normally if you look for the user's guide on their web site then substitute tm350sg.pdf for tm350ug.pdf in the file name, you will get the service guide. Posted by 7hz at March 26, 2005 08:05 PM ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I wish to know how does the power switch function, what is the mechanism involved and what do I need, before open up my tarvelmate. Please help. What can I do about it. It is difficult to find part in my country. Anyone of you know what can I use as a substitute. Thank you. Thank you. Posted by emfung at April 30, 2005 09:02 AM my power switch (cheap plastic) broke off years ago. i used a toothpick, or nail (kept a few in my travel bag) to start it. fortunately, the switch is a simple slider located just inside, about 1 cm inside from the opening, and 1 cm towards the front (latch end). so you angle the toothpick toward you (as you sit in front of the travelmate) - feel around for the switch with the toothpick, and slide (or use leverage), moving it *away* from you when you hit the switch to turn it on. took some practice at first, but now i can do it without thinking. really easy. just be gentile. the switch will resist just a little. you'll get the hang of it in no time. you can do the same to force shut off (and just use software for shutdown). Posted by 7hz at May 2, 2005 01:26 PM (which it totally isn't being fused to the heat sink) yikes, apologies for the dislexia there... that should read : (which actualy appears totally fused to the heat sink) Posted by 7hz at May 2, 2005 01:29 PM Thank you for the suggestion 7hz, I've opened up the uppercase today. What I did was to wheel around the slider with a pin. Because the slidder is so small, I've got to stick the pin to the slidder with 'superglue' to avoid detachment. I've reached to a local acer customer service centre hoping that they have a part available. Unfortunately, they refused to sell and insisted that I must leave my travelmate there for replacement. And that will cost me a 100 bucks (M'sia ringgit) for labour fee. This is the first time took apart my travelmate. It seems complicated at first, but then, when tried, it was pretty simple and interesting (to be able to look what's inside. Thank you. My question is has anyone tried to upgrade the memory past the 256/256 "maximum". I believe this was a WIN ME limitation, and not sure if it is a HW limitation.
